What if assessment could become the most powerful tool for learning rather than simply measuring it?
Authentic Assessment with AI: Designing Real-World Evidence-Based Learning is a self-paced professional learning course grounded in experiential learning theory, metacognitive research, and access-centered design. The course equips participants to design assessments that mirror real-world complexity and honor diverse ways of demonstrating competence. Through reflective analysis, collaborative design, and practical application, participants explore how AI tools can support formative feedback, scaffold reflection, and enable portfolio-based evaluation while maintaining the authentic human connection that makes assessment meaningful.
This transformative course invites educators and program leaders to move beyond traditional testing toward assessments that reflect how people actually use knowledge in professional and civic life. More than a methods course, this is a fundamental rethinking of what counts as evidence of learning and how we create conditions for students to demonstrate meaningful capability. Each module balances innovation with feasibility, building toward sustainable assessment practices that serve learners, honor cultural diversity, and prepare graduates for meaningful work and engaged citizenship.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Analyze the limitations of traditional assessment in an AI-saturated environment and articulate alternative approaches grounded in authentic evaluation.
- Design work-based, experiential, and scenario-based assessments that connect academic learning to real-world professional and civic contexts.
- Create transparent, co-created rubrics and success criteria that engage students as partners in defining quality and rigor.
- Build iterative feedback and portfolio systems that leverage AI tools to support reflection, growth, and documentation of learning while maintaining human connection and cultural responsiveness.
- Develop strategic plans for scaling authentic assessment practices across courses, programs, and institutions.
